People often observe, while watching stand-up paddlers glide across
Gray's Lake, that it looks hard. The observer generally follows up by
proclaiming she would fall off "that thing," then contemplates the
paddler, still blithely slicing the lake, with a wistful gaze.
The
observer then returns to mounting a rented kayak, walking a rescue pup,
or buying an ice cream sandwich at the concessions window, perhaps
silently resolving to try stand-up paddle "someday."
"People think
it's going to take a lot of balance," said Katie Gilbert of No Coast
Stand Up. "The truth is if you get the basic instruction on the right
spot to stand on the board, where to focus your eyes, keeping your knees
